Birthmark & Pigmented Lesion Treatment in Seoul
Quick answer: Birthmarks are pigmented or vascular marks present at birth or in early childhood. Some pigmented types, such as nevus of Ota and café-au-lait spots, are commonly treated with picosecond lasers, while vascular marks and moles need different care. At AMRED Clinic in Cheongdam, Seoul, a doctor first diagnoses the mark, then advises whether PicoWay is suitable; removal cannot be promised.
- At AMRED: PicoWay picosecond laser (four wavelengths), after diagnosis; no dedicated birthmark program is published
- Typical approach: diagnosis first; suitability for laser confirmed at consultation
- Not suited to pigment laser: vascular birthmarks such as port-wine stains; moles need medical evaluation
- Sessions: dermal pigment often needs several sessions over months; set at consultation
- Results: vary widely by type; complete clearance cannot be promised
- Planning: EVE V skin analysis + 1:1 doctor consultation
Which birthmarks can be treated with laser?
"Birthmark" covers very different conditions. Pigmented birthmarks contain extra melanin or melanocytes; vascular birthmarks are made of blood vessels. Lasers that target pigment, such as picosecond lasers, are relevant only to the first group, and even within it the response varies.
AMRED's published picosecond laser is PicoWay, which AMRED describes for deeply rooted pigmentary lesions, melasma, spots and freckles. AMRED does not publish a dedicated birthmark program. If you have a birthmark, the first step is a diagnosis; the doctor will then explain whether laser is appropriate, what improvement is realistic, or whether a specialist referral is the better route.
What are the common types of birthmarks?
- Nevus of Ota and similar dermal pigment – blue-gray or brown pigment deep in the skin, often around the eye and cheek; generally among the more laser-responsive types, over several sessions
- Café-au-lait macules – flat, light-brown patches; laser response is inconsistent and recurrence is possible
- Becker's nevus – larger brown patches, sometimes with hair; results vary
- Congenital moles (melanocytic nevi) – need medical monitoring; laser is not a substitute for evaluation or surgical removal
- Vascular birthmarks – port-wine stains and hemangiomas, treated with vascular lasers or medication rather than pigment lasers
Several café-au-lait spots can be associated with genetic conditions, so your medical history is part of the assessment.
Treatment options at AMRED
- PicoWay – 1064, 785, 730 and 532 nm picosecond wavelengths target pigment from deep to surface layers
- Hyperpigmentation assessment – when a mark may be acquired pigment rather than a birthmark
- Freckle removal – for small, sun-related spots often mistaken for birthmarks
- Redness lasers explained – why red, vascular marks need a different device
Signs a consultation may help
- A flat brown or blue-gray mark present since childhood
- Pigment around the eye or cheekbone that has darkened over time
- A mark that makeup does not fully conceal
- You want to know whether laser is realistic before committing
- You need a doctor's view on a mark that has changed
Why ask AMRED about birthmark treatment in Seoul?
The value of a consultation is an honest answer. AMRED's process starts with EVE V skin analysis and a 1:1 doctor consultation, and the Bespoke Report sets out whether a mark is suitable for PicoWay, what results might look like and how many sessions might be involved.
- Diagnosis before device: vascular marks and moles are identified and not treated with a pigment laser
- Picosecond precision: PicoWay's short pulses break melanin into finer particles while limiting damage to surrounding tissue
- No promises of removal: expectations are set case by case
- Referral when needed: if another specialty is more appropriate, the doctor will tell you
What happens at a birthmark consultation?
- History – when the mark appeared, any changes, and relevant family or medical history.
- Examination and imaging – EVE V and visual assessment of color, depth and borders.
- Decision – whether PicoWay is appropriate, a small test area is sensible, or referral is better.
- Treatment, if suitable – picosecond sessions spaced to allow pigment clearance.
- Follow-up – the response is reviewed before each further session.
How should skin be cared for after pigment laser?
- Expect some redness or slight swelling, which usually settles quickly
- Do not scratch or pick if fine crusts form
- Use sunscreen daily, since UV can trigger rebound pigmentation
- Keep the area moisturized and avoid harsh actives
- Contact the clinic about blistering or lasting darkening or lightening
Any mole that changes in size, shape or color should be examined by a dermatologist promptly, whether or not you plan treatment.
Birthmarks & Pigmented Lesions FAQ
Can birthmarks be removed with laser in Korea?
Some pigmented birthmarks, such as nevus of Ota, often lighten significantly with picosecond lasers over several sessions, while others respond unpredictably. Vascular birthmarks need different lasers, and moles need medical evaluation.
Does AMRED treat birthmarks?
AMRED has not published a dedicated birthmark program. Its picosecond pigment laser is PicoWay, and whether your mark is suitable is decided by a doctor at consultation.
Can café-au-lait spots be removed?
They can sometimes lighten with laser, but results are inconsistent and the color can return. A doctor should assess them, especially if there are several.
Is a pico laser used for nevus of Ota?
Picosecond lasers are a common choice for dermal pigment such as nevus of Ota, usually over multiple sessions. Your doctor will confirm suitability after examination.
Can moles be removed with a pigment laser?
Moles should be evaluated by a doctor first. Laser is not a substitute for medical assessment, and some moles are better removed surgically.
